Special Events
Big Creek People in Action has
many annual special events throughout the year that are supported by donations.
Being located in an isolated rural area, there are few recreational activities
for children and families. BCPIA offers many fun events to give families a
chance to spend time together in a wholesome atmosphere. Donations are greatly
appreciated for any of the following special events:
Spring Carnival
- Young and old alike play games for prizes including Wheel of Fortune, Plinko,
Basketball, Sand Art, Balloon Darts, Cake Walks, and much more.
Mountain Music Festival
- Presented on the first Saturday in June, the Mountain Music Festival is a day
of great music, delicious food and good ole' family fun. Area singers and
musicians perform on the outdoor stage all day while the kids play games and eat
the traditional mountain fare.
Christmas Party
- BCPIA serves approximately 150 area families with gifts, food and Santa.
Applications are completed so that children can ask for the gifts that they want
that are in a certain price range. All children in the family receive at least
two personalized gifts, treat bags from Santa, gifts for their Mom and Dad, a
turkey dinner with all the trimmings, and a substantial food box for the
family. A separate party is held for Senior Citizens in the area with gifts,
dinner and Santa as well.
Arts & Literacy Fair
- Different themed literacy activities are available with characters in
costumes, free books, and fun for the family.
Supper in a Sack
- Ten to fifteen parents or parents-to-be are involved in a six week nutrition
training session where they learn to cook health family meals. They participate
in cooking a full meal during each session, and are given all of the ingredients
to take home with them so that they each can cook the same meal for their
families.
Make a Difference Day
- A National Service project is planned that will make a difference in the
community.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
- A day on helpful service to the community in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Family Fun Nights
- Educationally based activities to offer parents literacy tips and activities
while the children participate in fun games and prizes and take a new book home
with them. Activities vary and have included Family Movie Nights, Science Fun,
and "Learning is Magic."
Veteran's Recognition "Honoring
the Sacrifice" -
County veterans are recognized for the sacrifice they made for our country and
community. Displays of military history and photos of area veterans are part of
the celebration.
Moms and Babes Fair
- Expectant mothers and those with children up to age five are invited to an
event to learn about the health and safety of their children. Different
agencies set up to increase awareness of nutrition, family health, poison
control, child safety, literacy, etc. Door prizes and gifts are given to those
that attend.
National Family Week
- A week of educational family activities.
